Daily stats – what do they mean?

The daily metrics listed in Bridget Jone’s Diary are easier to understand than the ones I am listing. So, here is an explanation of each metric.

Miles – This is the official AT miles hiked that day according to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy guide/maps.

Steps – These are the steps recorded on my Fitbit Charge 3. These steps capture everywhere I went. This number may include any of the following: the additional steps to get to a shelter or water source, steps breaking camp in the morning, steps setting up camp in the evening, steps around town on a zero or nero day (zero = day that I did not hike any miles on the AT; nero = day that I hiked nearly zero miles). The Fitbit wants to convert 2000 steps to 1 mile. This is accurate if I am in town or hiking on flat terrain. However, as soon as the grade increases, my steps get shorter. The steeper the grade, the shorter my step.

Kcal – This is the calories that I consumed that day.

Avg BG – This is the average blood glucose reading per my continuous glucose monitor. The goal for someone with diabetes is to have an average blood glucose less than 140 mg/dl. Thi is the equivalent of a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) less than 7%. Normal HbA1c is 4 – 6%. And, the average BG of 126 is roughly equivalent to an HbA1c of 6.
